A Better Story - a review
REVIEW
“We have a plausibility issue: what the Bible clearly teaches sounds so unreasonable to so many of us today.” That comment in Ed Shaw’s book, The Plausibility Problem, could well describe the challenge that Glynn Harrison takes up A Better Story: God, Sex & Human Flourishing. The book is his attempt “to say why I think traditional Christian teaching on sex, marriage and human flourishing is good news for today”.
Making Sense of God - a review
REVIEW
“Believers and nonbelievers in God alike arrive at their positions through a combination of experience, faith, reasoning, and intuition”. The provocative thesis of Making Sense of God: An Invitation to the Sceptical is that secularism as well as religion involves faith.
Setting the record straight on the Church's dark history
REVIEW
‘The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones.’ How easy it is to be specific with criticism criticising someone or something, but less so when commending someone or when we’re happy with a service. It is no surprise, therefore, that often the dark side of church history can be highlighted – sometimes rightly, but often so distorted as to have lost all perspective.
Unbelievable? - a review
REVIEW
For some it is the song EMF released at the start of the 1990s. For others it is the theme tune to Matthew Le Tissier’s career and the outrageous goals he scored for Southampton. But for some 2.5 million people, it is the soundtrack to a podcast from Premier Christian Radio.
Engaging With Atheists - a review
REVIEW
The God Delusion, Religion for Atheists, God is not Great, In Defence of Atheism and Against All Gods are just some of the books written by atheists arguing against the idea of God or seeking to set forth a positive atheistic worldview. As the author of The Dawkins Letters, and director of Solas Centre for Public Christianity, David Robertson is well placed to write this short book. Engaging with Atheists is written to help Christians understand the questions and issues atheists raise, in order to then reach out with the gospel and love of Christ.
The Distinctiveness of Early Christianity
REVIEW
It is a curiosity of our time that the features that made Christianity distinct in its first three centuries are now considered commonplace. Much scholarly attention has been given to similarities between the early Christian movement and the society of the day, but less has been said about the distinctive differences that saw Christianity challenge the cultural milieu, survive and even thrive to become the religion of the Roman empire.
Studying…Theology?
When you stop to think about it, the opportunities given in studying theology at university are amazing. The time to study the Scriptures, doctrines, church history and many other areas is an immense privilege. To be exposed to the heavyweights and their insights whilst being sharpened, challenged and matured in the knowledge and love of God is wonderful. To be a blessing to His people is the spin off for many years to come.
